AppleGum Tips & Tricks for success -
Zinnias can be grown indoors 6 weeks before your last frost date.
Seedlings can carefully be transplanted for earlier blooms.
Note - We have found that Zinnia’s do not like their roots disturbed - therefore moving of plants once planted can be troublesome, so we have found in our climate “Temperate” that we plough our field several times so that the soil is well turned and fluffy consistency. We then scatter the seeds on the soil then water. No need to push into the soil and we have good success with our field.
We do not worry about spacing as such we have found that the plants grow to suit the aspect they are grown within.
Zinnia’s can require staking or netting to support especially if grown in an open aspect. However growing next to a line of taller flowers such as sunflowers can be advantageous to both provide support and protection from the wind. Within a garden bed situation other plants, if grown near can provide support.
Zinnia’s are an easy to grow flowering annual that require little fuss and once established are not water thirsty. They grow naturally in a warm hot climate. They require little to no fertilising required to bloom and grow however a general liquid bloom nutrient supplement can be used when required.
Growers can collect the seed off flowers if left on the plant for the seeds to mature. These can then be planted in spring each year.
As an annual flower they make an excellent cut flower and have a long vase life. Flowers can be both double and single providing great interest.
Towards the end of summer period Zinnia’s can suffer with powder mildew however this does not effect the flowers or blooms or seed collection.
Flowers if cut for vase will need daily water changed to ensure long vase life.
Our flowers are grown on our farm and are chemical free and grown with love and care.
